TPACK

What is TPACK?

TPACK is technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge. TPACK is the combination of Technology, Pedagogy, and content. TPACK is the conceptual framework for professional educators that is used at Fort Hays State University. Pedagogy is teaching, content is what you are teaching such as a subject area, and technology is the things that have been developed through scientific knowledge. Most of us consider technology as things such as cell phones, ipods, ELMO's, computers, computer programs etc. The wonderful thing about our society today is that people can use these technologies to easily access information and can gain information on their own. Websites such as Google have provided a vast amount of information that is easily accessible.

It is imperative that Technology, Pedagogy and Content be combined. Although this can at times be difficult there are solutions and it can be done. You can start with just two of the TPACK areas such as pedagogy and content. Decide what will be taught and how you may teach it. Then add in the third area such as Technology. Decide then how you can teach it, what will be taught, and how you can integrate technology.

We must remember that it is crucial that technology be included in how we teach. Technology in our society has changed everything and even the way students learn. Teachers must remember to be creative in our solutions for combining technology, pedagogy, and content. We should be flexible in teaching with the TPACK framework. In order to teach effectively through TPACK we must be creative. We must produce creative solutions to teach with all three areas of TPACK. Creative solutions are novel, effective, and whole. Creativity are all simply variations on any theme, and it is simply adjusting the ideas. When teaching our studetns we must be flexible, creative, use the TPACK model and remember that we are designers of the total package. We can design ways to use TPACK so that technology is always integrated into our instruction along with content and our teaching. We should always be in the center making sure that each area is connected and integrated.
